What is But First Breakfast?
But First Breakfast is all about my favorite meal of the day…BREAKFAST!
I’m a former breakfast hater, dedicated morning person, and early riser.
It wasn’t until I was in my twenties that I began to wake up hungry.
Now that I love eating breakfast, I can’t seem to get enough. Seriously. I eat a first breakfast around 7:00 and a second breakfast at about 10:30.
My twenties are several decades behind me at this point. I still don’t know what made my hunger shift or why I’m ravenous upon awakening. These days, if I don’t eat a substantial breakfast, I’m miserable for the rest of the day.
Food for me is more than fuel,
Food is memory on a plate
Food is connection. Food is culture. Food is nourishment. Food is comfort in tough times and celebratory in good times.
Food is love.
I’m an unapologetic eater. I’m someone who goes to bed thinking about what to make for breakfast. I’m a nice Jewish “girl” originally from Baltimore MD. When I was a toddler my favorite sandwich was cream-cheese with sliced olives. My mother was an excellent home cook. The direct line between her and my love of food and cooking runs deep. Canyon deep.
Here at But First Breakfast we’ll explore how eating, cooking, and sharing food sustains us when we’re hungering for more than our next meal.
I’m profoundly glad you’re here.
Who Am I?
I’m a former chef and caterer, mother to a grown son, and wife to a husband whose work took me to cities, large and small. I’m someone who has moved eight times in thirty-five years. Sometimes, I’ve struggled with feeling like an outsider, like an other, like I don’t belong.
Eating my way into a new place, exploring my own hunger, connecting food memories to new experiences, is how I navigate the world.
